History
Shintaro Tsuji founded the Sanrio company in August 1960, originally under the name “Yamanashi Silk Company”. At first, the company was known for silk but eventually expanded to include rubber sandals with painted flower details. These cute flower designs brought attention to the company and in response, Tsuji hired cartoonists to create more cute characters for their products. The name was changed to Sanrio in 1973 and as more and more characters were added to the line up, the Sanrio name grew to be world famous!
